arrowStep by Step Quick Configuration

Basics

Before you can monitor your SNMP Devices, the server must be configured, so you will have to define which devices should be monitored and choose all settings to achieve a good configuration. All settings and device configuration can be made using the XR SNMP Tools FrontEnd, which is a standalone application that configures the main OPC Server. These steps will show you how to build a simple configuration file for monitoring network devices.

Step 1

With the FrontEnd open, the first step is to discover all devices that should be monitored. To detect SNMP devices on your network, press the "SNMP Scan" button.

Enter the network IP range for the SNMP detection process.
The software will attempt to find all SNMP compliant devices within the choosen range and list them.

Press the "Start Scan" button to begin scanning. All devices found will be listed after the scanning process is over.
Select the devices you wish to monitor and close the dialog by pressing "OK" button.

Step 2

The next step is to scan the SNMP variables that should be monitored.
Select the device and click on the "Database Scan" button in the OID View bottom toolbar.

After the scan process is over, all found variables will be listed. Select the variables you wish to monitor by clicking on the checkbox corresponding to them in the OID View.

Step 3

The next step is to create a Link Utilization Special Tag for advanced monitoring. This tag will calculate the Network Utilization of an interface based on raw data. Select the device and click on the "Add Tag" button on the Special Tag View, then select "Add Statistical Item" > "Link Utilization".

Enter a name and choose the raw parameters for this tag. You can restrict the available variables on the parameters' comboboxes to compatible ones by enabling the "Filter MIB- II Variables" checkbox. Click on the 1st order filter checkbox and Full Duplex checkbox if you are monitoring a Full Duplex link.

Close the dialog by clicking on the "OK" button. Mark the added Tag to be published on the server by clicking on the checkbox corresponding to it on the Special Tag View.

Step 4

The next step is to configure some remaining device settings.
Select the device, and then click on the "Device Properties" button on the toolbar or right-click the device and choose "Device Properties" from the context menu.

If you do not want to change these settings, leave them with the default values. Be sure, however, to enable data reads from this device by clicking on the "Scan Active" checkbox at the bottom of the dialog.

Close the dialog by clicking on "OK".

Step 5

The next step is to update the server to reflect this new configuration. Click on the "Activate Profile" button to complete the configuration process.

Step 6

Start the server with XR SNMP Tools Server Monitor and review its configuration. Probably you'll need to Reload the Server, clicking on the button "Reload Server". In the screenshot below, it is scanning one device for 93 items and current Server Status is "Normal".

If your server status indicates "Scan Overlap", you need to change some device-specific configuration settings. Please refer to the detailed FrontEnd configuration section for information on how to do that.
