Q: What is SNMP?

A: Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed system,  which describe the system configuration. It was originally developed to monitor network devices. Actually is used to monitor several devices and peripherals, like No-breaks, printers, CLPs, etc. See more in Technical References.

 

Q: What is WMI?

A: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provides an operating system interface through which instrumented components provide information and notification. WMI is preinstalled in Windows 2000 and newer OSs (including Windows Me). See more in Technical References

 

Q: What is ICMP?

A: Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is used by networked computers' operating systems to send error messages, indicating, for instance, that the request service is not available or that the host or router could not be reached using a function called PING.

 

Q: What is OPC?

A: OPC is an open connectivity in industrial automation and the enterprise system that support industry. Interoperability is assured through the creation and maintenance of open standards specifications. There are currently seven standards specifications completed or in development. Based on fundamental standards and technology of the general computing market, the OPC Foundation adapts and creates specifications that fill industry-specific needs. It is used in some industrial applications and some critical mission environments.See more in Technical References.

 

Q: What is as Probe?

A: Probe is a new concept created by XRatel to define a management variables. It is possible to create a probe using ICMP, SNMP or WMI variables. Using XRatel, you can configure alarms and plot charts using its values. They also helps to monitor system health and speed. See more in Server Config.

 

Q: What are the minimum system requirement to use XRatel?

A: A: The minimum system requirement is:

-Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server/XP/Vista

- Service Pack 4(2000) / Service Pack 2(XP)

- Intel/AMD processor @ 600MHz

- 128MB RAM

- 1GB Hard drive space

- Network interface card (Ethernet).

 

Q: Is XRatel compatible with all SNMP versions?

A: Yes. XRatel can monitor SNMP v1, v2c and V3 devices. Notice that you must configure device settings for collect correctly using Xratel Server Config.

 

Q: Is it possible to get any OID provided from SNMP devices?

A: Yes, it is. You can search for all OIDs using Scan Raw probes button. You can also add a specific OID an configure it manually. See more in Add SNMP Probe.

Q: There is any XRatel version for MAC OS or GNU/Linux?

A: No. XRatel can be installed only with Windows 2000, 2003 Server, XP and Vista. You can monitor Mac OS or GNU/Linux using SNMP.
